Every centre diamond comes with its own IGI report, and the report number is laser-inscribed on the stone's girdle — so the certificate can always be matched back to the diamond in your hand.

What the certificate is for

A diamond's price is set almost entirely by four things you cannot reliably judge by eye — and two stones that look identical across a counter can differ by a factor of three in price. The report is an independent third party stating what the stone is, so that the price has something behind it other than our word.

IGI is the laboratory that grades the majority of the world's laboratory-grown diamonds, and it is the standard reference for them.

Carat is weight, not size. A well-cut 1.00 ct round and a poorly-cut one weigh the same and look nothing alike, because a badly proportioned stone hides its weight in depth where you cannot see it. If you read one line other than carat, read the cut grade.

Laboratory-grown, and what that changes

A laboratory-grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness, same refractive index, same sparkle. It is not a simulant — cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that imitate the look; this is not that.

What differs is where it crystallised. Ours are grown in a reactor over weeks rather than in the earth over an age, which is why the same colour and clarity costs a fraction of the mined equivalent, and why we can put D colour and VVS clarity in a ring at a price that would otherwise buy a considerably worse stone.

The report says “Laboratory-Grown Diamond” on its face. We would not have it any other way — the value here is in being able to buy a better stone honestly, not in anyone being unable to tell.

Checking it yourself

  1. Take the report number from your certificate.
  2. Enter it in IGI's Report Check on igi.org.
  3. Compare what the laboratory holds on file against your paper copy.

To match the certificate to the stone itself, a jeweller's loupe will show the same number inscribed on the girdle — the thin band around the widest part. It is deliberately too small to read unaided.

Keep the certificate. It is required for the Lifetime Diamond Upgrade, for a return, and for insuring the piece. A replacement report has to be ordered from IGI, takes several weeks, and is chargeable.

The side diamonds

Melee — the small accent stones in a pavé band or a halo — are not individually certified. No laboratory grades stones at that size; the cost of the report would exceed the cost of the stone many times over, and this is standard across the industry.

They are instead specified as a batch, and ours are held to EF colour and VVS–VS clarity — the figure shown as Side Diamonds on every product page. That is a tighter specification than most accent stones are held to, and it is why the pavé does not go grey against a colourless centre.
