What is covered

A manufacturing defect is something that was wrong when the piece left us, even if it only showed up later. In the first twelve months we repair or replace, free:

  • A stone lost because its setting failed — a bent prong, a loose bezel, a channel that opened
  • A clasp, hinge, screw-back or spring that fails in normal use
  • A solder joint that separates
  • Rhodium plating on white gold wearing through in the first year — replated once, free

Where a repair is not possible, we remake the piece to the original specification. Where the original design is no longer available, we agree a replacement with you before doing anything.

What is not covered

Work done by another jeweller ends this warranty. That includes resizing, retipping prongs, resetting a stone and repolishing. Once someone else has worked on a piece we cannot tell what was our doing and what was theirs — so if something needs doing, come to us first, even out of warranty.

Also outside the warranty:

  • Accidental damage — a knock that bends a shank, a chipped stone, a crushed band
  • Normal wear — fine surface scratches, a band thinning over years, plating wearing after the first year
  • Chemical damage — chlorine, bleach, perfume and cosmetics, which attack alloys and dull a finish
  • Loss or theft, including a stone lost to impact rather than to a failed setting

None of this is refused work — it is chargeable work. We repair pieces we made regardless of cause, quoted before we start.

Making a claim

  1. Send us your order number and clear photographs of the problem through Contact Us.
  2. If it looks like a warranty matter, we book a free insured collection.
  3. Our workshop assesses it within 3–5 business days and tells you what it found before doing any work.
  4. Repairs take 7–12 business days depending on what is needed. The piece comes back insured, free.

If the assessment finds the damage is not a manufacturing defect, we tell you what it would cost to put right. You are free to decline — we return the piece free either way.

After the first year

The warranty ends at twelve months, the relationship does not. Bring a Smiling Rocks piece back at any age and we will service it: retipping, replating, restringing, straightening, stone replacement. All quoted in advance.

Free annual service

Once every twelve months, for as long as you own the piece, we will ultrasonically clean it, check every setting under magnification, tighten what has loosened and repolish the metal. Free, including shipping both ways.

This is the single most useful thing you can do with a ring you wear daily. Prongs loosen gradually and silently; a stone is almost always lost some months after the setting first started to move. An annual check catches it while it is still a two-minute fix.

Looking after it yourself

Take it off for

  • Swimming pools and hot tubs — chlorine attacks the alloys in gold
  • The gym, and anything involving weights or bars
  • Cleaning, gardening, and washing up
  • Applying perfume, hairspray, sunscreen and lotions — put jewellery on last

At home

Warm water, a drop of unscented washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked gently behind the stone where the film that dulls a diamond actually collects. Rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Store pieces separately — in the pouch they arrived in, or a lined box. Diamond is the hardest thing in your jewellery drawer and will scratch every other piece in it, including the gold of another Smiling Rocks ring.

Do not use toothpaste, baking soda or ultrasonic cleaners at home. All three are abrasive enough to damage a finish, and an ultrasonic bath can shake a loosening stone the rest of the way out.
